Follow-up

Call it more of a "foil experiment." The scuttlebut has the timings pretty firm as they now stand. Yesterday was to visualize no-off-target lights and the new target area.

We are working to have some video clips from yesterday, so you can see the foil lamés they were using.

2:07 pm

Not much is happening today. The early/prelim rounds for the Men's Epee Team fenced today, and might already be done. Looks like Team USA is due to fence France in the L16. ...not confirmed. The press room looks dead.

Timing change!

The big thing is — at 2:30pm today, the FIE is testing the new timings. They have a special StM Allstar box where you can change the block and depression timing, as well as bibs and cuffs for the new target area.

What will theoretically happen is, the top N fencers in the world will fence each other, and fiddle with the timings until they find a setting everybody likes, and then that will be the new timings.

Right now on the center floor, fencers from China are hovering around the table bearing the new lamés and, oddly, reels. In the background, Golubitsky is talking to an unidentified-but-French looking fencer. Everybody is grabbing their gear, and getting suited up.

7:37pm

Sanzo is whaling on Zhang to the tune of 13-4... now 14-4. The odd upsets in the earlier round made for some uneven matchups later. Beaudan was smushed, now Zang. Sanzo hardly had to break a sweat in order to win. They're throwing him up in the air -- that might be Mr Mangiarotti on the strip, giving Sanzo his first hug. They're lifting Mangiarotti!

Anne-Lise Touya wins the Women's Sabre!

Doing or commentary tonight for te World Championship Sports Network — Aida Mohammed (Hungary), Tim Morehouse (USA), Wojiech Szusnicki (Poland).

5:15 pm

Beevers (GBR) is out, eliminated by Kudayev (Russia) 11-10 when the time ran out. Beevers gave up at least 2 touches to penalties for (?) showing the back of the head, and or corps-a-corps. Some penalties seemed a bit suspect. Beevers very nearly became top 8!!

4:31 pm

Keibrink / Zhang bout in the 16... They are locked at 12-12 in overtime. Zhang has priority.

Oooooooh! Kleibrink is out!!! China attacked. Parry, riposte from Kleibrink -- misses! Zhang has charged past Kleibrink. Wait! -- Zhang hits Kleibrink behind the head as he passed — one light! Zhang is up.

4:20 pm

Cassara (Ita) is having a hard time against France's Beaudan. 14-9 Beaudan. Cassara is getting very upset and irritated. When Beaudan attacked and fell over, clutching his ankle... Casarra went over to his prone figure, and tested his weapon.

4:21 pm

Cassara out by Beaudan. "That's history."

9-9 Kleibrink (Germany) and Zhang (China).

Poetic waxing: What a weird World Championships. Cassara, Bissdorf, Joppich, the Russians, Vanni out (Sanzo is still in). Jacobson, Zagunis out. Perhaps by the time the finals roll around tonight, there will be one or two fencers left that we recognize.

3:55 pm

Great Britain's James Beevers #27, just eliminated Peter Joppich #6!! Beevers is promoting into the 16!!

Bissdorf eliminated by S. Lei of China.

Poland's Mocek is leading Le Pechoux, 13-11.

3:03 pm

Richard Kruse (GBR) eliminated.

Sanzo eliminates Josh McGuire (Canada)

Schuznicki (Poland) eliminated by Cassara. Confirmed.

2:40 pm

Vanni eliminated by Stoukaline. (We're predicting Stoukaline against Bissdorf, and Bisdorf promoting. But we've been very surprised today.)

Unconfirmed, Szuchnicki (Poland) eliminated by Cassara (Italy).

2:21 pm

Josh McGuire (Canada) to fence Sanzo (Ita).

Richard Kruse (GBR) against Zhang (China).

Nonpat Panchan (Thailand, USA), eliminated by Baldini of Italy.

Andras Horyani (USA) confirmed eliminated by Wojiech Szuchnicki (Poland).

Tomer Or (Israel), Moltchan (Russia), Ota (Japan) eliminated by Kleibrink (Ger). Ganeev (Russia) eliminated.

1:39 pm

Women's sabre started late... so when the top 8 went out to fence, the men's foilists were already hooking up! The men's foilists had to be sent back until the women's sabre was done.

1:28 pm

Kellner eliminated 15-11. Bad call touch before last. We don't know the status of Horyani.

1:23 pm

Jed Dupree led Hanxiong Wu (China) for the first half of the bout. Wu started coming back, with long dangerous attacks that Dupree was sometimes slow to parry. Dupree landed several beautiful flicks and used a very tight parry riposte through the game. He was not able to defeat Wu's endgame. Eliminated 15-13, round of 64.

Dan Kellner #12 is presently fighting back from a 4-point deficit with Marco Goncalves #53 of Portugal, but it's very close and Portugal has and idea how to frustrate Kellner.

12:25 pm

Jeff Bukantz commented: "That was a rough 30 seconds for us."

Within that time period, on two strips, Jacobson lost 15-13 to Ilara Bianco (Italy), while Becca Ward lost 15-11(?) to Allesandra Lucchino (Italy). None of the USA favorites made it into the final four.

11:45am

Thompson eliminated.

Zagunis eliminated by Rebecca Ward, 15-8 (maybe 15-9). Ward found too many openings in the first period, and by second period when Zagunis started re-asserting it was too late. Ward fenced brilliantly.

11:21 am

Red strip: Caitlin Thompson fights against Alessandra Lucchino (Italy) — she's down 3-5 right now, and needs some cheering. Patriotic fencingchannelers are rushing down the stairs from the skybox.

.... Now 5-7!

Blue strip — Jacobson is being very firm with Orsolya Nagy (Hungary), to the tune of 12-7.

10:48 am

Zagunis/Vignaux (France) bout in the 32... The French fencer would not come on guard. The ref kept saying, "On guard, on guard, on guard..." Finally he reached for into his jacket... and pulled out a handkercheif.

10:20 am

Men's foil:

  • Jonathan Tiomkin eliminated before the 64
  • Dupree, Kellner, Horanyi have strong opponents in the 32 and 16.

Women's sabre:

  • Three US Women Sabrists in the same Tableau
  • Jacobson has clear path to top 4

Other news: Siobhan Byrne (Ireland), #43, just eliminated #22 Bogna Jozwiak (Poland) !

midnight (Actually this is being put in late...)

Danuta Dmowska (Poland) won the women's epee. Team Poland tried to rush out onto the strip -- but they were restrained by the security guard! They had to cheer from the stands. So, Danuta ran across the room, camera-be-d*mned, into the stands, and was lifted into the air in the stands for the traditional champion-throwing-session. The security guard got yelled at for that.

Then Danuta was dragged back up on strip by the German announcer and asked some questions -- Are you happy? Who do you wish to thank? Clearly a little terrorized, Dmowska thanked her family and boyfriend, etc.

Then an old man charged up on strip, streaming smoke from his lit cigarette. He tried to hug her and kiss her — this ended the interview very quickly. We hear it was the Polish Federation president, he was exhuberantly happy.

Last night's announcers on the live television feed: US Team fencers, Jason Rogers, Maya Lawrence, Lindsay Campbell. Thank you, guys! Great work! Tuesday night we will see Tim Morehouse co-announcing with Alex Ripa for the Women's Sabre finals.

6:00pm

We're starting Men's Sabre — next update will be after all the dust settles for the night.

Women's Epee finalists:

Laura Flessel-Colovic (France)
Maarika Vosu (Estonia)
Danuta Dmowska (Poland)
Sherraine Mackay (Canada)

The MS / WE bouts are interspersed... first all the semi's are fenced, then the two final bouts. There are broadcasters, announcers, MCs. We're stationed in the media/press areas (we have a skybox, but we can't do our shows from there). Last night we were next to the French announcers... there was a big problem and their feed showed 9 minutes of empty strip.

Covaliu (Rom) is taking the strip against Shturbabin (Ukr), so wee you later!

4:47pm

Sherraine Mackay (Canada) is in the top 4!! 15-11, final touch was a fleche.

~2:30-3pm

Men's foil preliminaries being fenced. Based on the pools flashing on the super-screen at the end of the arena — Kellner, Tiompkin-or-Dupree, Horyani are all promoting into the 64.

Sherraine Mackay (Canada) just won her 16 against German Britta heidemann — winning 15-8? Came back and won in the last period, after trailing the first two periods.

Women are fencing the 32. They will go until the top 4 remain. After that, the men's sabre finals start, followed by the Women's Epee finals.

S. MacKay (Canada) was seeded #8 going into the tournament. After some risky periods in her first bout (in the 64) where she was trailling her opponent, Se Jung Jang #66, by 5-2, she returned and won.

Presently she is on the BLUE strip, and she just eliminated Yana Shemyakina 15-11.

Flessel-Colovic (the wasp), just won her bout 15-11 in the 32. Her final touch was a toe-touch.

1pm

Kelly Hurley took #1 rank Maureen Nisima (France) to 5-5 at the start of the 3rd period. Nisima took two quick touches with long attacks, before Hurley rallied with a close-distance riposte. Some doubling out as the time ran out — Hurley couldn't catch up. 10-8

Men's Sabre — The final four are:

Covaliu, Mihai #7 ROMANIA vs.
Shturbabin, Oleg #37 URKAINE

Pozdniakov, Stanislaw #5 RUSSIA vs.
Yakimenko, Alexey #1 RUSSIA

11:04 am

Lee is taking the Red strip against 9th-seed Boris Sanson of France!

Lee is first to 8, with Sanson at 7 getting advice from his coach at the end of the strip. Lee is more decisive and "on" than in his 64 bout against Korea.

Lee 9/8... Sanson hit him hard in the head. Lee is down! He's lying beside the strip, people over him. He's not moving much, he's holding his head. Medicos are working with lee; we have a man on the floor looking for information.

Report from the floor — he was seriously belled on the head. But it was by Boris Sanson (9th seed). Took a while for him to recover... or he may have been... taking a rest.

Lee is on his feet, moving around and warming up again. Sanson goes up to apologize, Lee gestures "no problem". Lee pulls ahead shortly, but can't keep it. Sanson eliminates Lee in the round of 32, score 15-13.

11:00 am

MS being fenced.

Anecdote: Dmitri Lapkes, #2 seed, was down 3-13 vs Dumitresku (Romania). Then he tied it at 13-13. Got 12 points in a row to win at 15-13. Nice comeback.

Right now Tarantino (Italy) is beating Woo Young Wong (Kor) 14-10. France's Pillet just dropped a point to Y Huang of China... and another! China leading 10-8. At publication, score is Fra 10-12 China.

Huebner of Germany beats Lopez of France, 15-12.

10:30 am (All times in CEST)

Men's Sabre and Women's Epee — finals start at 5:45pm.

Men's Sabre: Rodgers, Crompton, Morehouse eliminated in the 64. Lee is in the 32. Presently, the 32 is fencing. We'll know the top 4 by 12:10.

Women's Epee: Fencing later today. Kelley Hurley is facing Nisima of France. Maya Lawrence went 3-3 in pools, but didn't win the bout to enter the 64.

Women's Foil: Yesterday, Hannah Thompson was eliminated by the eventual #2, Müller of Germany, in the round of 32. Sylwie Gruchala was eliminated in priority-overtime by eventual #3 Wullieme of France.
