7:52 pm
Fabrice Jeannet versus Sven Schmid for the last round. France leading 40-30.
41-30.
Given how France is fencing, it will be very difficult for Germany to make up the score.
44-30 for France.
45-30 France wins!! |
|
7:38 pm
Schmid is trying to capitalize on Jerome Jeannet's week beginning game, before the Frenchman waskes up and finishes his bout. Schmid thus far is one of the highest-scoring Germans; his points include a hand touch and two flying flicks.
28-22 for France. Though Schmid is successful, he's having trouble closing the gap. |
|
7:21 pm
NOTE: this is EPEE. Earlier I mistyped foil, but it ain't that.
M Schmitt of Germany is fencing Jerome Jeannet, and has scored two points to massive German applause. They just clashed belle guards with a horrible grinding noise that made people scream, and Schmitt fell back down the strip, with Jeannet in pursuit.
10-5 France
11-6 double touch
Martin Schmitt is pumping up, and with a series of close touches closed the score to
12-9
13-9 Jerome Jeannet counters as Schmitt rushes in
14-9 Jerome fleches |
|
7:14 pm
Boisse of France is up against Schmid. Twice Schmid has set up a dangerous attack, and twice Boisse has turned it around on him.
7-1 France
8-1 as Schmid attacks, and Boisse parries 3 and then brings it to the German's thigh
8-2 Schmid sneaks a touch in the face of the French onslaught
9-2 Boisse decides he would like another touch.
9-3 As Schmid scores.
1:20 left on the clock... but we're probably going to finish based on score. |
|
7:09 pm
Jeannet takes the strip against Fielder of Germany. In the first 15 seconds — Jeannet fleches and scores! At 2:30 into the period, Jeannet hits again! At 2:00, again!
France 3-0!
For those of you who are writing, saying you'd like to hear Linda Strachan's commentary with Alex Ripa — the whole World Championship DVD set will be available a month from now. (Not available in the United Kingdom.)
Just kidding. It's not available in portions of the European Union that include Gav's town, but aside from that, the DVDs will be global.
And GERMANY lights the board for the first time — the German crowd goes crazy. Drums, horns, whistles, cheers, and good ole-fashioned clapping.
Jeannet quickly comes back with an attack / remise.
5-1 for France. (Epee, outscoring foil tonight.) |
|
6:55:01 pm
Yess! Yes!! She's done it! Keep an eye on Hyun Hee Nam, simply an amazing fencer.
She attacked into Scarlat, and took the point.
South Korea —
World Champion women's foil! |
|
6:55 pm
Hyun Hee Nam — Dynamo! — is up as the last bout. She's moving fast, but Scarlat of Romania is too experienced to be hit easily. 18-19 for Romania.
Hello to all our UK readers! Tonight we have Linda Strachan co-announcing — and she is doing a marvelous job. Too bad you can't hear! It is wonderful.
19-19, as Dynamo brings them even.
Overtime! Korea has priority!
The score is so close, tonight we might use the Referee's strip-side slow-motion, which was created and installed for the FIE by Fencing Pictures. |
|
6:51 pm
Seo of Korea is fencing a defensive game, as she's uninspired on the attack. A lot of pressure from Romania's Stahl, as they try to make up the 18-17 deficit in the penultimate bout.
It works, as Stahl scores another point, bringing it to 18-18.
18-19 Romania!
|
|
6:39 pm
14-15 for Romania presently. Romania is strong enough on defense that Korea can't deliver any dominating attacks... except for that last one:
15-15.
16-15.
17-15. Now it's time to see how Romania thrives under pressure.
17-16.
18-16 going into round 8. Korea leads. |
|
6:35 pm
Women's Foil Team Final is up first. After trailing the first 5 rounds, Korean dynamo Hyun Hee Nam tore Romania a new one, making the score even. She's under 5 feet tall, and very light. However she has the fastest footwork, perhaps, in the tournament, and is very good at three things in alternation: long preparation attacks, running away, and stepping in with parry. She is like a hummingbird.
The other South Korean fencers can't keep the same level of excellence, and steadily increase their lead with every round.
13-14 Romania. In this round thus far, 30-yr-old workhorse Scarlat has scored 2, Seo has scored 1.
All the women's team matches today have been low-scoring. 23-22. 30-20. |
|
4:19 pm
The Third Place Women's Foil Team is.... France! 45-33. |
|
2:48 pm
Women's Foil: Korea eliminates France! By over 10 points. It was a route.
Romania eliminates Hungary; in the final bout, Aida Mohammed was able to bring the score within one point, but was running out of time, had to hurry, and got clocked for 5-6 touches in the last 20 seconds.
Men's Epee: France / Germany final!
Germany is ON FIRE. France is ON FIRE. This will be a killer team match. |
|
1:42 pm
Men's epee is taking the strips for its semi-finals.
- Hungary / Germany
- France / Ukraine
The last time France / Ukraine fenced, in the last round, the Ukraine had a massive lead. The last relay is on the Monal DVD from Fencing Pictures as a special feature— Fabrice Jeanne took the strip, and scored 10+ points.
Commentary tonight: Linda Strachan, FIE UK director, will be co-announcing with Alex Ripa. |

1:11 pm
Okay — big news from Women's Team Foil
No words can express the tension in the France/Poland bout. After trailing the prior rounds, Gruchala came in with a deficit of 18-24. She worked it up to 23-24 before her opponent, Wuilleme, ran a series of touches to 24-27. It looked bad, but in a trice Gruchala had brought it close again -- 27/28. Time ran out, giving France the match at 29/27.
Meanwhile — Romania somehow came up on Italy. We weren't watching closely, because the score was some 24/20 nonsense... Vezzali was working her tail off for some reason, the Italians were screaming and groaning for some reason. It turned out to be the 9th round. Gruchala squeaked the score up, 24/21, 24/22, 24/23. Time was running out. Vezzali fought like a lion. But then Romania scored again... and time ran out. Italy eliminated.
When this happened, Hungary went crazy, hugging and kissing. They face Romania in the semi-final, and they appear to be very confident in the outcome. They quickly finished spanking China (20 points ahead), and went to rest.
Meanwhile, Korea #7 eliminated #2 Russia. (!!)
So France facing Korea, and Romania facing Hungary, in the semi-final. We will product a France / Hungary final match. |
|
12:40 pm

10:42 am
While Men's Epee Team fences on the subsidiary strips, in the "main ring" Women's foil team is working through the round of 16.
Canada #10 versus Korea #7 -- the Canadian fencer has a severe ankle twist, stopping the bout. She had her ankle wrapped and is hobbling off the strip — it looks like Bouchard. Canada's team: Bouchard, Daoust, Kwan, Therrien. Korea: Jung, Lee, Nam, Seo.
USA #11 vs France #6. Presently USA trails 11-6 in the third bout.
We're going to go down and see what's happening. Based on the screams from the audience, the German team is fencing on blue strip.
