Foil Experiment Footage
Wednesday, October 12th was a "free day" at the World Championships. Apart from some team preliminaries, there was no competition going on. So the FIE referee commission brought out all its gadgets and did a series of foil experiments.
Experiments included: Wireless foil, foil without off-target lights, and foil with the arm-as-target (the arm lamés would only become "hot" if the fencer had his arm against his body, e.g., he was covering target). What wasn't tested: relaxed depression timings, the bib-target.
The fencers in the experiment were the highest ranking fencers from each continent. European fencers weren't involved (though some, like Sanzo, showed up to watch), and neither were women fencers. Golubitsky directed.
The experiment is now available on video. Foil Experiment Video. |

Women's Sabre Team: USA vs France
Having two of the strongest fencers in the world on your team doesn't count for much if you can't get it together. Sada Jacobson just went down 5-1 against France; Rebecca Ward has been doing heroic work so far (based on indicators), and has brought the score to 6-10 against the World Champion. Zagunis came in, and with great effort brought the score 15/14.
Earlier, Ward averted a crisis when Great Britain #10 drew ahead. Ward balanced the score at 38/38, and finished the bout 40-38, and then USA was able to win the final round.
