World Cup Fencing in Las Vegas

 

Women's SabreThe best fencers in the world, including former and future Olympians, will gather for three days of international competition in Las Vegas this summer June 16-18, 2006. The grand finale of the competition will be a gala event in The Pavilion at the Stardust Hotel and Casino.

Many of the best fencers in the world, including 2004 Olympic medallists Mariel Zagunis (21, Beaverton, Ore.) and Sada Jacobson (23, Dunwoody, Ga.), will compete.

This event is one of a series of World Cups held around the world this season. As the Women's Saber cup is a Grand Prix event, it will be a critical qualification event for the 2006 World Championships to athletes from around the world.

Individual and team events in women's saber and women's foil and team women's saber will be held. The Team World Cup events will also be important test leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

Other cups are held in locations such as Athens, Greece; Como, Italy; Paris, France; or Moscow, Russia. This is the second year in a row the U.S.-based World Cup will be hosted by Las Vegas.

A complete schedule is attached. Admission to preliminary rounds is free. Admissions to finals events is free to USFA members and $10 at the door for the public. Come see U.S. athletes battle the world's best in the original extreme sport!

Many of the USA's, and the world's, finest fencers are registered to compete. Most of the top twenty fencers in the international World Cup standings will fence in Las Vegas.

Local Luminaries:
Former Junior World Championships team member Susan Jennings, now a coach at the Fencing Academy of Nevada, is scheduled to compete. Jennings represented the U.S. at last year's Las Vegas World Cup in the Women's Team Foil event.

Many Nationalities will be represented in Las Vegas, including Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Taipei, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia.
